Did the name Kim Đồng Publishing House ever spark a thought about its origin? Here we stand, before this eight-story building, home to Vietnam’s largest publisher of children’s books. Kim Đồng Publishing House isn’t just a name. It’s a legacy. A tribute to a young Viet Minh fighter who fell in 1943. Established on June 17, 1957, Kim Đồng Publishing House began as a beacon of hope. A promise to nurture young minds in a newly independent Vietnam. The government prioritized education, recognizing the power of art and literature. This building, at 55 Quang Trung Street, became the epicenter of that vision. Kim Đồng Publishing House publishes over a thousand titles annually. They churn out twelve million copies every month. Imagine the sheer volume of stories flowing from these walls! From literature and science to art and comics, Kim Đồng offers a diverse platter for young readers. They even publish pop-up books and board books, appealing to all ages. Kim Đồng Publishing House doesn’t simply print words on paper. It builds bridges. It collaborates with over 70 foreign publishers, including giants like Dorling Kindersley and HarperCollins. This ensures a constant influx of fresh ideas and book types. Beyond publishing, Kim Đồng actively engages with the community. They champion various initiatives for children, including the Doraemon Scholarship Fund. Remember the early, somewhat illicit, Doraemon publications? Kim Đồng rectified that, paying the necessary copyright fees. They then used those funds, in collaboration with Shogakukan, to establish this scholarship fund. They also contribute to supporting Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, building book collections for the poor, and constructing schools in mountainous regions. Kim Đồng Publishing House has left an indelible mark on Vietnamese literature. Works like “The Adventures of a Cricket” by Tô Hoài and “The Southern Forest Land” are just a few examples. They have introduced international comics like “Detective Conan” and “Dragon Ball” to Vietnamese children. This building stands as a testament to their dedication to nurturing young minds. It embodies the spirit of Kim Đồng, the young fighter, ensuring his legacy lives on. Kim Đồng Publishing House is more than a publisher. It’s a storyteller, a nurturer, and a keeper of dreams.
