Whispers of history linger in Kilpauk. Imagine a time long before bustling streets and towering buildings. Kilpauk was different then. Bounded by a stream and lakes it was a tranquil haven. The British initially avoided Kilpauk. They preferred the relative safety of the fort. But soon the threat of invasion lessened. The British moved to Kilpauk’s spacious garden houses. Early residents faced ridicule. They were called jungle inhabitants. However Kilpauk quickly transformed. Shaded roads and widely spaced bungalows appeared. Only a handful of families resided on each street. Affluent Indians also sought Kilpauk’s serene atmosphere. They too built grand houses amidst the greenery.

Kilpauk’s allure extends beyond its idyllic past. In 1934 an excavation unearthed a prehistoric cemetery. Burial urns and pottery showcased Kilpauk’s ancient origins. This discovery made Kilpauk one of Chennai’s oldest inhabited areas. The excavation yielded other treasures. Gold buttons bricks and earthenware were found. A well and a sarcophagus on six legs were also discovered. This prehistoric find brought Kilpauk significant attention. The Second World War halted further exploration. By then Kilpauk had become a sought-after residential area.

Kilpauk played a key role in Chennai’s development. The city’s first water treatment plant was built here. Completed in 1914 it had a capacity of 80 million litres per day. Its massive overhead tank was the largest in the city. This plant significantly improved the city’s water supply. Two notable engineers were instrumental. JW Madeley and Hormusji Nowroji contributed substantially to the project. Both men have roads named after them in Kilpauk.

The Kilpauk Medical College holds a special place in the area’s history. Initially it was the Government School of Indian Medicine. Established in 1925 it trained students in traditional Indian medicine. The Rajah of Panagal generously donated his Hyde Park bungalow. This enabled the school to function successfully. After several changes the college was eventually converted into the current Kilpauk Medical College. One of the college’s blocks is named after the Rajah of Panagal.

Kilpauk’s rich history also features the Institute of Mental Health. Founded in 1795 it is one of the oldest mental institutions in South Asia. It initially housed 54 European patients. Over time it expanded becoming the largest such facility in South Asia. During World War II its patients were moved to safer locations. This was a precaution against a potential Japanese bombing.

The Kilpauk Cemetery is another significant landmark. Initially East India Company churches used churchyards for burials. By 1700 these were full. A new location was needed. Kilpauk Cemetery was established in the 1900s. It was the largest cemetery in the city. It spanned 16 acres and contained a tomb dating back to 1903. Like other cemeteries it eventually reached capacity. New burials stopped nearly two decades ago.

Kilpauk’s legacy extends to cultural figures. Balasaraswati a renowned dancer lived in Kilpauk. She was a staunch defender of the traditional dance form Sathir. She preserved its unique aspects. Satyajit Ray created a documentary of her exceptional talent. He captured her intricate facial expressions. These remain a testament to her artistry.

The Otteri Nullah flows along Kilpauk’s northern edge. It is one of Chennai’s natural water streams. The nullah was used for irrigation. Later urbanization impacted the nullah. It became a dumping ground shrinking significantly. This led to mosquito problems and flooding during heavy rains.

The story of Kilpauk continues to unfold. It is a place rich in history cultural significance and natural beauty. It remains a captivating blend of the past and the present.
