“Church of Mochuda” whispers the ancient name. Kilmacud. A Dublin suburb nestled between history and modernity. This quiet area holds secrets. Its name hints at a saint. But which Mochuda? Was it Mo Chutu of Lismore? Or perhaps Malo a companion of Brendan the Navigator? Some even suggest Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. His cult might have arrived with Norse settlers. Kilmacud’s identity is as layered as its history.

Kilmacud’s story unfolds along its roads. The Lower Kilmacud Road a winding path. It starts in Goatstown. It meanders southeast before turning east. It stretches for 1.6 miles eventually reaching the N11. The Upper Kilmacud Road begins in Dundrum. It climbs then levels out before a sharp turn. It descends finally joining the lower road near St Laurence’s Boys School. This road is 1.8 miles long.

The boundaries between Kilmacud and Stillorgan blur. Kilmacud Crokes GAA club sits in Stillorgan. Stillorgan’s Catholic parish is named Kilmacud. Kilmacud itself centers around the Upper and Lower Kilmacud Roads. Until the 1970s a sign marked Stillorgan. It stood near Beaufield Park. The sign stood near shops by St Laurence’s Church and the Stillorgan Shopping Centre. This marked the early growth of the area. The Chapel of SS Laurence and Cuthbert stood nearby. It was there long before the current St Laurence O’Toole church opened in 1969.

Kilmacud’s schools tell more of its modern story. Scoil Lorcan Naofa St Laurence’s primary school honors Laurence O’Toole. St Raphaela’s Primary School and Mount Anville National School also serve the area. St Benildus College Mount Anville Secondary School and St Raphaela’s School provide secondary education.

Transport links connect Kilmacud to Dublin. The Luas Green Line has two stops nearby. Stillorgan is near the Sandyford Industrial Estate and a reservoir. The Kilmacud stop sits south of St Benildus College grounds. Plans for the Dublin Metro Metrolink once included a stop near the Luas stop. But as of 2019 this was uncertain.

Kilmacud’s past and present intertwine. From its uncertain saintly namesake to its modern amenities. Kilmacud’s story is a blend of ancient roots and suburban growth. It’s a quiet corner of Dublin. Yet it holds within it a rich tapestry of history and community. A place where the whispers of saints mingle with the sounds of modern life. This is Kilmacud. A place where history and modernity coexist. A place worth exploring.
