How does one find peace in a world of chaos? For some, it’s found high on a cliff face in the Paro Valley, at Kila Gompa. Kila Gompa, also known as Chele La Gompa, is no ordinary nunnery. Founded in the 9th century, it clings to the cliffside, a testament to the enduring faith of the nuns who call it home. Legend has it that Kila Gompa was first established as a meditation center by Drupthob Chhoeje Norbu. After a fire ravaged the original structure, it was painstakingly rebuilt by Sherub Gyelthsen, ensuring its legacy lived on. Today, Kila Gompa is often referred to as the “second Tiger’s Nest,” a nod to the famed Taktsang Monastery and its dramatic setting. The “second Tiger’s Nest” offers breathtaking views of the valley below and a glimpse into a life dedicated to contemplation and spiritual practice. Though the climb to Kila Gompa might be a challenge, the reward is well worth it. Here, far from the clamor of the world, you can almost hear the whispers of prayers carried on the wind, a symphony of devotion echoing through the centuries.
