“This country is vast” King Cyilima I Rugwe declared in the 14th century. He surveyed the land from a broad hill. This hill would later give its name to Kigali. Kigali the capital and largest city of Rwanda.

Kigali is situated in a region of rolling hills. It has a series of valleys and ridges joined by steep slopes. The city lies between Mount Kigali and Mount Jali. These mountains have elevations of more than 1800 meters. The lowest areas are at 1300 meters. Kigali’s strategic location made it a perfect spot for a capital. It’s near the nation’s geographic center.

Founded in 1907 as an administrative outpost Kigali grew slowly. Richard Kandt a colonial resident chose the site. He appreciated its central location security and views. Foreign merchants began trading in Kigali during the German era. Kandt even established government-run schools for Tutsi students. Kigali remained relatively small during the Belgian era. The population was only around 6000 at independence in 1962.

Tragedy struck Kigali in April 1994. President Juvénal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down. His death triggered the Rwandan genocide. Over one million Tutsi were killed. The Rwandan Patriotic Front resumed fighting. They seized Kigali on July 4 1994.

Post-genocide Kigali experienced rapid growth. Much of the city was rebuilt. Modern buildings and infrastructure were added. The city’s skyline transformed. Kigali became a hub for conferences and events. It is now a major arrival point for tourists. They come to visit Rwanda’s national parks and see the mountain gorillas.

Today Kigali is a vibrant city. It is a melting pot of cultures. It has a thriving economy. The service sector is the biggest contributor to the city’s gross domestic product.
