Established in 1999 the Kigali Institute of Education stands before you. A beacon of hope. A testament to Rwanda’s resilience. Its creation was a direct response to a critical need. The 1994 genocide devastated the nation. Education was among the sectors severely impacted. A shortage of qualified teachers threatened the future. KIE was the answer.

The Institute’s mission was clear. Train teachers for primary and secondary schools. Develop educational research. Promote peaceful coexistence. It was ambitious. It was necessary. It succeeded beyond initial expectations. KIE provided pre-service and in-service training. It offered five-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. A crucial year of intensive language courses in French and English preceded these degree programs. This ensured teachers could serve a diverse population.

International support was essential. The World Bank the Swiss Cooperation the Belgian Cooperation and various governments contributed. Rwanda’s government provided the infrastructure. Administrative offices lecture rooms a library hostels and more were built. These buildings are more than just bricks and mortar. They represent an investment in the future of a nation.

The Institute’s impact is far-reaching. It addresses a nationwide issue. The shortage of qualified secondary school teachers stood at 63%. KIE’s Distance Training Office played a key role. It used distance education to train 500 teachers. This initiative extended into ten centers across Rwanda’s eleven provinces. It was innovative. It was effective.

KIE also established a Centre for Computer Services and Applications. This center was pivotal in improving the technology across the institute and beyond. It produced skilled informatics personnel. It enhanced computer literacy. It provided support for distance learning centers. KIE offered various other educational opportunities. A Certificate Course in Library and Information Studies was launched. Additional courses in languages computer skills and secretarial studies further expanded access to learning.

The Kigali Institute of Education’s legacy extends far beyond its walls. It’s a symbol of recovery. It’s a testament to Rwanda’s commitment to education.
