Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Bangkok, Khlong Toei District unfolds. It’s a place of stark contrasts, where bustling markets and modern skyscrapers rise alongside the largest slum in Bangkok. Khlong Toei, meaning “canal of pandan,” whispers tales of a rich past. The district’s history stretches back to the 9th century. It served as a vital port along the Chao Phraya River, connecting cities upstream like Pak Nam Phra Pradaeng.

Khlong Toei District wasn’t always its own entity. It was once a part of Phra Khanong District. In 1989, it carved its own identity, becoming the Khlong Toei District we know today. Originally, it encompassed six sub-districts. Three of these later branched off to form Watthana District. This administrative shift reshaped the urban landscape, giving birth to new neighborhoods and redrawing the lines of community.

Khlong Toei District is home to Bangkok Port, once the sole major port for cargo shipping in Thailand. Construction commenced in 1938, reaching completion in the aftermath of World War II. Situated along the Chao Phraya River, not far from the Gulf of Thailand, the port bustled with activity. However, its limited capacity and the escalating traffic woes caused by semi-trailer trucks led to a gradual shift in operations. Much of the shipping activity migrated to Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi Province after its opening in 1981.

Within Khlong Toei District lies a microcosm of experiences. From the educational wonders of the Bangkok Planetarium and the Science Center for Education to the vibrant Khlong Toei Market, the largest wet market in Bangkok, the district offers a sensory feast. You can stroll through Benjakitti Park, a green oasis built on the former site of the government’s tobacco factory, or find tranquility in Benjasiri Park, commemorating Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday. Hidden amidst the urban hustle lies Tamnak Plai Noen, the historic residence of Prince Naris, now transformed into a museum.

However, Khlong Toei District also bears the weight of a stark reality. South of the expressway and north of the port sprawls the Khlong Toei slum, a stark reminder of social disparities. Home to approximately 100,000 people, this densely populated area occupies land owned by the Port Authority. The slum stands in the shadow of towering skyscrapers and luxury shopping centers like The Emporium, highlighting the vast chasm between affluence and poverty.

The district pulses with a mix of experiences. Nana Plaza, a notorious red-light district, caters to the adult entertainment scene. Meanwhile, bustling transportation hubs like the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) connect Khlong Toei to destinations like Pattaya, Rayong, and Trat. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway lines crisscross the district, offering convenient access to various parts of Bangkok.

Khlong Toei District embodies the essence of Bangkok. It’s a place where history, culture, commerce, and social realities intertwine. From its humble beginnings as a riverside port to its present-day complexities, Khlong Toei District continues to evolve. It remains a poignant symbol of Bangkok’s multifaceted identity.
