Have you ever heard of the bustling heart of Khlong Sam Wa District in Bangkok? This lively area, a testament to the city’s impressive growth, once held a secret. Imagine a time before the towering buildings and bustling markets, before the area was a popular destination for shopping and dining. Back then, Khlong Sam Wa was a rural community, with farms sprawling across the landscape and canals, or “khlongs,” gently winding their way through the countryside. These canals provided a lifeline for the farmers, allowing them to transport their goods to market and ensuring the prosperity of the community.

Khlong Sam Wa was established as a district on 21 November 1997. It was carved out of Min Buri, so it inherited the name of the “khlong” that gave its name to the district. You may find it interesting that “Khlong Sam Wa” translates to “canal of three wa.” This refers to the width of the canal, which happens to be three wa, or 5.943 meters.

While the district boasts a vibrant culture, perhaps the most fascinating detail is the “labour market” in the heart of Bang Chan sub-district. This unique market is affectionately nicknamed “Kip Mu,” which means “pig’s hoof.” Every morning, from about 5:00 a.m. until no later than 9:00 a.m., contractors gather in their pick-up trucks to find workers for the day. These individuals come from diverse backgrounds, all seeking work as carpenters, painters, plumbers, welders or maybe simply unskilled labor. It is a scene of both hustle and hope, a testament to the resilience of the local community and their determination to make a living.

Khlong Sam Wa District is now a thriving district with numerous attractions, including the Safari World, a massive leisure complex with 500 acres devoted to a bird park, a wildlife sanctuary, and a marine park.
