Khlong Lak Khon

“Khlong Toei… Khlong Tan… Phra Khanong…”. What an odd collection of names you think, as you stand beside Khlong Lak Khon. These are just some of the other khlongs, or canals, that criss-cross the bustling city of Bangkok. Today we’re standing at the edge of Khlong Lak Khon, a waterway that tells a quieter story than its more famous counterparts. While it might not be as grand as the Chao Phraya River, Khlong Lak Khon is a piece of the city’s intricate system of waterways. These canals once pulsed with the lifeblood of Bangkok. They served as the main avenues for transportation and trade for centuries. Think about it. Before modern roads and cars, imagine boats laden with goods and people navigating these narrow channels. They witnessed the city’s growth and transformation firsthand. Khlong Lak Khon and other khlongs like it were essential for draining the land, irrigating fields, and connecting communities. They were the veins and arteries of the city, carrying life and energy to every corner. Over time, though, many of these canals were filled in to make way for roads and buildings. The once dominant waterways gradually faded into the background. Khlong Lak Khon still exists. Even in its modernized state, it offers a glimpse into Bangkok’s past.
