“This land holds a story, a story of resilience.” Khallat Hamameh, a place caught between history and hardship. Originally part of the Bethlehem and Ramallah districts, after 1967, Khallat Hamameh found itself absorbed into Jerusalem’s municipality. This wasn’t just a change of address. It was a change of identity, a shift in the very fabric of life for its Palestinian residents. Imagine living in the shadow of the Ayda refugee camp, the echoes of displacement mingling with your own. This is the reality for the people of Khallat Hamameh, a place where the struggle for belonging is woven into the landscape. One family, the I’miahs, embody this struggle. Holding deeds that whisper of generations past, they found themselves battling for their five dunums of land. A dunum, a measure of land echoing Ottoman rule. In 1995, Israeli authorities claimed one dunum for the bypass road #60. Imagine the audacity of laying asphalt over history. The I’miahs found themselves in a bureaucratic labyrinth. Despite paying the ‘Arnona’ property tax to Jerusalem municipality and receiving utilities from Israeli ministries, their ownership was questioned. Their fight for recognition led them through the corridors of the Jerusalem municipality court. The only victory, a permit from the Israeli army allowing entry into “Israel.” The irony, a bitter pill to swallow. Khallat Hamameh stands as a testament to the complexities of this land. It is a stark reminder that borders drawn on maps often cut through the heart of communities, leaving behind fragments of lives caught in the balance.
