Picture the gold dome gleaming under the Utah sun. That’s the Khadeeja Islamic Center. It stands proudly in West Valley City a testament to faith and community. This magnificent mosque wasn’t always so grand. It began in 1992 with a simple vision a big box. The building committee approached architect Kimly Mangum. They wanted a functional space for prayer. Their budget was modest just $600000.

The Khadeeja Islamic Center wasn’t built overnight. The first phase completed in 1994 was a single-story building. It had a main prayer hall. Men prayed facing northeast touching their foreheads to an Egyptian carpet. Women prayed separately behind a temporary divider. A U-shaped cove was carved into the north wall. This is where the imam stands to lead prayers and deliver sermons.

The washrooms known as wudu were adorned with turquoise tiles. The doors featured half-barrels and arches. This initial structure was only 5000 square feet. It quickly proved too small. By 1999 a growing Muslim community necessitated expansion.

Phase two began. The minaret grew taller. It was moved from the southeast to the northwest corner. Women received their own dedicated space and washrooms on a new second story. A gold dome topped with a crescent moon completed the transformation. Arabic calligraphy covered the walls. A new chandelier a replica of one in Muhammad’s mosque in Medina was installed. This second phase added 10000 square feet. The Khadeeja Islamic Center now holds at least 1500 people.

The project was fully funded before completion. Remarkably the Khadeeja Islamic Center faced no opposition. Utah Muslims found welcome and support. Then-Mayor Brent Anderson even attended the groundbreaking. The center’s growth continued. Additional land was acquired. Plans for an Islamic school and community hall are underway. The Khadeeja Islamic Center is more than just a mosque. It is a vibrant center for the Muslim community in Utah. It’s a place where faith is celebrated and community is strengthened. It’s a place where history is made one prayer one gathering at a time. And it all began with a vision a big box transformed into a symbol of hope and faith.
