KGOL-AM

Slipping through the static of time, KGOL-AM has echoed across the Greater Houston area since 1983. Originally known as KTUN, this 1180 AM station started with a middle-of-the-road format, spinning popular adult music. Imagine cruising down Humble’s streets back then, C-QUAM AM stereo filling your car, KTUN providing the soundtrack to your day. While popular locally in Humble and Kingwood, the signal struggled to reach the wider Houston area during the day. At night, it barely whispered beyond Humble’s city limits. KGOL-AM, as we know it, truly began its journey in 1986. A Christian radio station, also called KGOL, broadcasting on 107.5 FM in Lake Jackson, was sold and rebranded. The KGOL call sign, standing for “God Of Love,” and its Christian programming, migrated to the 1180 AM frequency. This marked a significant shift for KGOL-AM. Over the years, KGOL-AM became a brokered station, hosting a diverse array of programming. From the business-focused “Biz Radio Network” to the South Asian sounds of “Hum Tum City,” from Spanish talk and music to Vietnamese broadcasts, KGOL-AM reflected the evolving tapestry of Houston’s communities. It even served as the home of ESPN Deportes Radio in the mid-2010s, before the network hopped over to 1230 KCOH in 2017. KGOL-AM then briefly adopted Entravision’s “La Tricolor” format, before settling into the soothing melodies of “La Suavecita,” a Spanish-language AC format. In 2021, another transformation occurred. Entravision sold KGOL-AM to FM Media Ventures, a company owned by Rehan Siddiqui, a Pakistani media entrepreneur. Siddiqui, the force behind “Hum Tum Radio,” brought a new chapter to KGOL-AM’s story. This powerful station, one of only two 50,000-watt AM facilities in Houston (the other being KTRH), has a unique challenge. Due to its shared frequency with Class A WHAM in Rochester, New York, KGOL-AM must reduce its power to 3,000 watts at night to avoid interference. It also relies on a directional antenna. Located on Route 1314 in Porter, Texas, near the Grand Parkway, the transmitter continues to send KGOL-AM’s signal across the airwaves. Today, KGOL-AM continues its broadcast journey, its history a testament to the ever-changing landscape of radio and the diverse voices it carries.
