In 1989, a spark ignited in the heart of Russia, a spark that would eventually illuminate the lives of countless Jewish women. This spark became Project Kesher, and here at 2660 Broadway, Suite 16, we find the Kesher Center, its beating heart in New York City. Project Kesher’s story began with a simple encounter. Social worker Sallie Gratch, from Illinois, met Svetlana Yakimenko, a teacher from Moscow. Both women were Jewish and shared a passion for their heritage. Together, they embarked on a journey throughout Russia and Ukraine. They discovered isolated pockets of Jewish women, unaware of their shared history and traditions. These women, living side by side, yet worlds apart, yearned for connection and a rekindling of their Jewish identity. Gratch and Yakimenko recognized the immense need and the powerful potential within these communities. They facilitated gatherings, where women shared stories, learned about their heritage, and explored civic engagement. From these humble beginnings, Project Kesher was born. The Kesher Center stands as a testament to their vision. Project Kesher wasn’t just about religious revival. It was about empowering women, equipping them with the tools to become leaders and advocates within their communities. The organization recognized that by uplifting women, they could strengthen families, communities, and ultimately, society as a whole. Over the years, Project Kesher has blossomed into a vital lifeline, training women activists committed to Judaism, feminism, and pluralism. The Kesher Center, right here in New York, acts as the hub for their global efforts, connecting women across continents and cultures. From its offices at the Kesher Center, the organization works tirelessly to advance women’s status and advocate for a more just and compassionate world. Their work spans from supporting women in active war zones to fostering dialogue and understanding across diverse communities. The Kesher Center is more than just an office; it’s a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and the enduring power of connection.
