Is it possible that a village could whisper tales of waid cultivation and ancient trade routes? Welcome to Kerspleben. This charming part of Erfurt holds stories that stretch back centuries. Kerspleben’s history is rich. It is full of interesting facts and events.

Kerspleben was first mentioned in 1104. It appeared in the property register of Erfurt’s Peterskloster. But its origins are likely much older. Kerspleben probably started as a Germanic settlement. By 1184, it was known as Krispeleben.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Erfurt region thrived. This was due to the cultivation of waid. Waid is a plant used to produce a blue dye. Kerspleben’s farmers prospered from it. The discovery of America and the introduction of indigo eventually ended this boom. Kerspleben benefited from its location on the Via Regia. This was a major trade route from Erfurt to Leipzig.

In the 16th century, Hans Tunger led local peasants against the city of Erfurt. Tunger came from Kerspleben. From 1664 to 1802, Erfurt and Kerspleben were under the rule of Kurmainz. In 1815, Kerspleben became part of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Erfurt, however, became part of Prussia. This border hindered Kerspleben’s growth.

In April 1945, US troops occupied Kerspleben. Later, the Red Army took over. In 1994, Kerspleben was integrated into Erfurt. Since then, the village has grown significantly.

The village has a landmark 52-meter-high church tower. It belongs to the Holy Spirit Church. The tower dates back to 1456. In 1721, the church’s nave was rebuilt. The tower was also remodeled.

Today, Kerspleben is a mix of old and new. Many timber-framed houses have been renovated. They contribute to the village’s appealing character. A new residential area was built between 1997 and 2003. It lies to the north and east of the village.

With a population of around 1,792 people, Kerspleben is a vibrant community. The village has several clubs. These include a fire brigade, a history club, and a sports club. They maintain traditions and customs.

Kerspleben is also an important business location. The Fichtenweg industrial area hosts over 56 companies. They are active in manufacturing, services, and wholesale. The village is well-connected. The Erfurt ring road provides quick access to the A4 and A71 motorways.
