Why was Kerroogarroo Fort built so far from the Isle of Man’s towns?

Kerroogarroo Fort stands before you a testament to a turbulent time in Manx history. It’s also known as Ballachurry Fort or Fort Loyal. This unfinished star-shaped earthwork was built in 1645. It was the brainchild of James Stanley the seventh Earl of Derby and Lord of Mann. The English Civil War loomed large. Stanley a Royalist prepared for conflict.

Construction began. Thick earthen walls rose with bastions at each corner. A moat surrounded the structure a formidable yet incomplete defense. Why incomplete? The Earl was needed elsewhere. He left for England to fight for King Charles I. His wife and brother took charge.

The fort’s location is curious. It sits far from towns like Douglas and Castletown. No river or road nearby. One theory suggests that the northern plain was marshy in the 1640s. An army marching south would have had to pass Kerroogarroo. A strategic chokepoint. Or perhaps it was a secret storehouse for supplies. We may never know.

In 1651 things changed drastically. The Earl was captured executed for treason. Parliamentarian forces surrounded the Isle of Man. Most defenses surrendered easily. But Kerroogarroo Fort held out. Major William Stanley its commander refused to yield.

A stand-off ensued. Then a Roundhead named Ewan Curghey lost his temper. He ordered a nearby house set ablaze. Seeing the fire Kerroogarroo’s garrison panicked. They fled. The fort fell. A rather ignominious end for a fortification that was never really finished.

After the war Kerroogarroo Fort faded from historical records. Its name even changed possibly to distance it from the defeated Royalist cause. Now you see little more than earthworks a path a square clearing. A silent sentinel to the complexities of the past. The story of Kerroogarroo Fort is more than just a fort it’s a microcosm of the English Civil War’s impact on a small island. It’s a mystery that even today keeps captivating visitors.
