Dreaming of a cool drink? This brings us to the Keramikbrunnen. It is an artwork and fountain.
The Keramikbrunnen in Dortmund may not be as famous as the Europabrunnen, but it has its own charm. The Europabrunnen is in the city center. It is on Kleppingstraße. It is near Marienkirche. The Europabrunnen was created by Joachim Schmettau. It was installed in 1989.
Before the Europabrunnen, there was a stepped fountain. It was built in the 1970s near Marienkirche. Schmettau’s design won against five other artists. One was Eberhard Linke. He had already designed the Gauklerbrunnen.
The Europabrunnen is made of granite and bronze. The small upper basin is 0.5 m. The large lower basin is 4.5 m. The widths are 7 and 12 m. The city lists it as art in public space. Its number is 44135-003. Schmettau used the street’s slope in his design. He also used an old stream. Water comes from the upper basin. A bronze frog sits on the north side. Water flows over steps. These show the old stream. The water fills the lower basin. On the south side, a bronze figure tries to climb the fountain. Both basins have small fountains. The lower basin has a wide edge to sit on.
The Keramikbrunnen may not have all these features. But like the Europabrunnen, it adds art to Dortmund. Dortmund is known for its mix of old and new. It has historic churches and modern buildings. The Reinoldikirche is an old church from the 13th century. The U-Tower is a modern art center.
Dortmund is Germany’s eighth-largest city. It has over 600,000 people. It is called the Green Metropolis. It has many parks and gardens. The Westfalenstadion is Germany’s largest football stadium. Dortmund is also a UNESCO City of Literature since 2019.
The Keramikbrunnen. It adds to Dortmund’s art scene. It is a place to stop and enjoy. It is a reminder of art in our daily lives. It shows that even a simple fountain can be special.
