Did the walls of this very building whisper tales of Prussian kings? They did. Right here before you stands the Keramik-Museum Berlin. It occupies the oldest surviving townhouse in Charlottenburg. Imagine, a structure built in 1712, designed by none other than Eosander von Göthe, the royal architect of Frederick I of Prussia. The Keramik-Museum Berlin isn’t just about the ceramics within. It’s about the very walls that hold them. This building has seen centuries pass, from Prussian royalty to the vibrant city of Berlin we know today. In the 1980s, this building was almost lost. Declared a significant cultural heritage site, it fell into disrepair. Then, on Christmas Eve 1983, the owner attempted to demolish it. Public outcry halted the destruction. The district stepped in, and architect Ulli Böhme meticulously restored the building. They used 18th-century materials and methods, bringing it back to its former glory. Now, the Keramik-Museum Berlin houses a vast collection. Over 8,000 ceramic objects, mainly from 19th and 20th-century German culture, reside here. The collection includes works by renowned ceramists. Names like Peter Behrens, Charles Crodel, and Margarete Heymann grace the displays. You’ll find design classics alongside unique pieces. The collection represents various styles. Historism, Jugendstil, Expressionism, Bauhaus, and Functionalism are all showcased. From delicate porcelain plates to colorful glazed clay flutes, each piece tells a story. The museum’s exhibitions often focus on specific themes. They offer a glimpse into the evolution of ceramic art. The Keramik-Museum Berlin is more than a museum. It is a testament to the enduring power of art and history, nestled within the heart of Berlin.
