In the shadow of the Oquirrh Mountains, a powerhouse hums with a legacy of innovation. This is the Kennecott Copper Power Plant, a testament to the ever-evolving relationship between industry and progress. The Kennecott Copper Power Plant’s story begins not with its construction in 1942, but decades earlier, with the burgeoning copper industry in Bingham Canyon. Initially, power came from the Salt Lake Water and Electric Company, a hydro-electric plant on the Jordan River. But the insatiable hunger of copper production demanded more. By 1906, the Utah Copper Company (UCC) constructed its own steam electric generating plant at Magna. This 8.5 MW plant powered the Magna Mill and the Bingham Mine, fueling the copper boom.
However, the merger with Boston Consolidated Mining Company in 1910 further amplified production and power needs. The Magna plant proved insufficient, leading UCC to purchase hydro-electric power from the Telluride Power Company. The Magna plant, though kept for emergencies, went quiet, foreshadowing the Kennecott Copper Power Plant’s future dance between self-sufficiency and external power sources. Fast forward to World War II. The Bingham Mine, a vital source of copper for the war effort, once again outstripped its power supply. This time, it was Utah Power & Light (UP&L) that couldn’t keep up. The Kennecott Copper Power Plant, a symbol of wartime necessity, was born. Constructed between 1942 and 1944 at a cost of $8 million, it boasted a 100,000-kilowatt capacity, fueled by either natural gas or coal.
The plant didn’t escape wartime delays, suffering a six-month setback. But the Kennecott Copper Power Plant emerged as a symbol of adaptability. Post-war, the plant continued to grow, mirroring the nation’s industrial expansion. A major expansion in the late 1950s added a 75,000 kW turbine generator, boosting the plant’s capacity to 175,000 kilowatts. This project, costing $16 million, showcased impressive feats of engineering, like raising the massive generator 30 feet with an intricate system of lumber and railroad ties.
The Kennecott Copper Power Plant’s journey wasn’t without its pauses. Economic downturns in the 1980s led to temporary closures. Kennecott, then owned by British Petroleum, once again relied on external power sources. The plant, however, was not destined for obsolescence. Rio Tinto’s acquisition in 1989 brought renewed investment. Even into the 21st century, the Kennecott Copper Power Plant adapted, shifting from coal to natural gas. This reflected a growing awareness of environmental responsibility, a far cry from the early days of unregulated industry. Finally, in 2019, the Kennecott Copper Power Plant was fully decommissioned. Its legacy, however, resonates far beyond its silent machinery. The plant served as a vital energy source for nearly 80 years, powering not just copper production, but also the growth and evolution of a community.
