Were you aware that perched alongside the serene Brisbane River lies the charming suburb of Kenmore? Kenmore is more than just a pretty face. It boasts a rich history woven into the fabric of Brisbane’s growth. Kenmore’s story begins in the 1840s. It started as a part of a sprawling sheep and cattle run stretching all the way from Milton to Mount Crosby. Imagine those early settlers, forging their lives amidst the Australian wilderness. By the 1850s, the land began to be divided. Plots of 15 to 20 acres were offered to new arrivals from Britain, eager to carve out their own piece of this new world. The area around Kenmore played a crucial role in Brisbane’s early development. It provided timber during the 1850s and 1860s. Small farms dotted the landscape, producing a variety of crops. Around 1880, a pivotal figure emerged in Kenmore’s history: Andrew Todd. Todd acquired a significant 100-acre plot right in the heart of what we know today as Kenmore. Interestingly, in the 1890s, plans were set in motion for a railway line from Indooroopilly to Brookfield, passing right through Kenmore. This railway would have followed the picturesque Cubberla Creek valley, roughly parallel to today’s Kersley Road. Unfortunately, this railway project never saw the light of day. Despite this setback, Kenmore continued to thrive. Education blossomed with the opening of Kenmore Provisional School in 1900, later becoming Kenmore State School in 1909. Dairy farming became a significant activity in the early 1900s, followed by the arrival of Chinese market gardeners in 1910 who cultivated a variety of vegetables. Kenmore’s community spirit is evident in the Kenmore War Memorial. Commissioned by the residents, it was unveiled in 1920. Originally situated at the intersection of Moggill Road and Brookfield Road, it now resides peacefully in Pike Place, a memorial park near the shopping centre. The modern development of Kenmore took off in the 1950s. Hooker’s acquisition of dairy farming land around Dumbarton Drive spurred residential growth. Road upgrades in 1960 further facilitated this expansion. Kenmore now also has two shopping centres, Kenmore Village and Kenmore Plaza. These centres provide a hub for the community, offering various shops, services, and a meeting place for the Kenmore and District Historical Society, which actively preserves the area’s rich history. The area’s educational landscape further expanded with the openings of Our Lady of the Rosary School, Kenmore South State School, and Kenmore State High School. Kenmore even weathered the 2010-2011 Queensland floods, a testament to the resilience of its community. Today, Kenmore remains a vibrant suburb. It is a blend of historical charm and modern amenities. It serves as a testament to the pioneering spirit of its early settlers. As you wander through its leafy streets and bustling shopping centres, remember the layers of stories beneath your feet, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry that is Kenmore.
