Once a hub of shipbuilding and industry Kelvinhaugh stands transformed. Imagine the clang of hammers the hiss of steam. For over a century the area thrived. Shipyards like Alexander Stephen and Sons dominated the landscape. These yards built ships for twenty years before moving across the Clyde. John Shearer and Sons followed taking over the site for another thirty years. Their departure marked the beginning of the Yorkhill Quay. The A & J Inglis shipyard nearby operated from 1862 to 1962. Its presence added to the industrial might of Kelvinhaugh.

The decline of these industries left behind a legacy of vacant land and abandoned buildings. The area fell into disrepair. The Kelvinhaugh name was used less frequently. A large expanse of Queen’s Dock was filled becoming the SEC Centre. This revitalized a part of the city. The Clyde Auditorium and SSE Hydro were added boosting the popularity of the nearby Finnieston and surrounding areas.

The proximity to the University of Glasgow spurred new developments. Vacant land was transformed into modern student accommodation. This has led to a population surge. However locals note the lack of community identity. Many students live there temporarily. Their attention is focused on the University. Main thoroughfares have become more congested. The local primary school an 1880s building became a private college. Its playground was sold for new flats.

The SWG3 arts venue has brought a new vibrancy. Converted from disused railway arches and warehouses it’s a popular live music venue. Its popularity has increased after similar venues closed. Its success has supported local businesses. Vibrant murals added to the railway arches facing the Clydeside Expressway in 2019 enhance the area. Sadly two teenagers died after attending a music event there in August 2023. Across the expressway a landmark pumphouse which once controlled access to Queen’s Dock has been converted into a Clydeside distillery. It replaced a maritime heritage centre that moved to the Riverside Museum. This movement reflects the evolving nature of Kelvinhaugh. Kelvinhaugh’s story is one of industrial might decline and modern regeneration. It is a neighbourhood constantly reshaping itself. It continues to be a vibrant and evolving part of Glasgow.
