Once upon a time, Three Mile Scrub covered much of what we now know as Kelvin Grove. This area played a crucial role for the Turrbal people. They used it for fresh water and hunting because of the Enoggera Creek and a billabong in what is now McCaskie Park. These lands served as a significant cultural hub. Barrambin now Victoria Park was a gathering place for corroborees and storytelling.

Now fast forward to 1865. Dr Joseph Bancroft built a residence here. He named it Kelvin Grove after Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow. He remembered it fondly and that is how Kelvin Grove got its name. Dr Bancroft was a renowned botanist and a prominent community member.

Kelvin Grove Road State School opened in 1875 marking a new chapter. The school split in 1887. There was now Kelvin Grove Boys State School and Kelvin Grove Girls and Infants State School. A merger occurred on January 31 1950. It created Kelvin Grove State School and Kelvin Grove Infants State School. The schools consolidated again in 1961 when the Infants School was absorbed back. In January 2002, Kelvin Grove State School and Kelvin Grove State High School joined to form Kelvin Grove State College.

The suburb was part of the Shire of Ithaca. That was before being incorporated into Greater Brisbane in 1925. Electric trams began running along Kelvin Grove Road in 1901. They connected the suburb to the city. The tram service ended in 1968. Buses then took over, first diesel and later compressed natural gas.

In 1914, the Bancroft Park Estate was auctioned. It was located near the Three Mile Bridge on the Kelvin Grove tram line. The estate was once the residence of Dr Bancroft.

Kelvin Grove State High School opened in 1961. It stood across Victoria Park Road from Kelvin Grove State School. The section of Victoria Park Road between the schools was closed. Tank Street was renamed as part of Victoria Park Road.

After the Gona Barracks closed in 1998, the site became the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. Queensland University of Technology’s Kelvin Grove campus integrates with residential and commercial buildings there. The Urban Village officially opened in 2003.

Today, Kelvin Grove is a vibrant suburb. It is known for its blend of history, education, and community. Kelvin Grove has a diverse population and offers a mix of traditional and modern living. Kelvin Grove continues to evolve while cherishing its past.
