“Dream Park for All Children”. That’s what some call Kelly Memorial Playground. It is more than just swings and slides. This space embodies Brooklyn’s spirit of inclusion.

Kelly Memorial Playground stands here because of a vision. The NYC Parks Department wanted something extraordinary. They dreamed of a playground accessible to all children regardless of ability.

This vision became reality through a 20 million dollar partnership. MRC joined the Parks Department to revitalize Kelly Park. The goal was to create Brooklyn’s first barrier-free play space.

The playground is named after William E. Kelly. Kelly was a Brooklynite born in 1872. He served as county postmaster and Clerk of Kings County. He died in 1929.

In October 2024, the reconstructed Kelly Park Playground was unveiled. The reconstruction improved ADA accessibility. Vital amenities were added through two projects.

The first project cost 10 million dollars. State Senator Felder funded it. It added new play equipment. Spray showers, slides and climbers are now available. Winding paths welcome children of all ages and abilities. A sandbox with toy fossils sparks exploration. Playtime stations allow children to explore music and colors. New trees, plantings, benches and lighting create an inviting atmosphere.

The second project reconstructed the park’s public bathroom. It added accessibility features. This project cost 1.6 million dollars. The Office of the Mayor funded it.

The playground has unique features. Three fully ramped play units integrate with a six-foot-high concrete mountain. A concrete pathway leads to the summit. This ensures that every child can experience excitement.

Kelly Memorial Playground has zones for different age groups. Two areas are designed for ages two to five. Two separate zones cater to ages five to twelve. A custom maze installation adds adventure.

The revitalization extended beyond play equipment. A refreshing spray shower provides seasonal fun. Strategically placed seating areas offer caregiver supervision. Enhanced security lighting extends play hours. Modern drainage and water supply systems were installed. Updated electrical service ensures safety. Carefully selected plantings enhance the natural environment. Even an iconic bear statue was preserved.

Kelly Memorial Playground also offers sports facilities. There are tennis courts, basketball courts and baseball courts. Bicycle parking makes access easy.

The best time to visit Kelly Memorial Playground is spring or fall. The weather is mild then. Be prepared for varying conditions throughout the year. Summers can be hot. Winters can be cold.

While here, you might see squirrels and birds. You might even spot raccoons or rabbits. Remember to respect their habitats. Observe them from a distance.

Kelly Memorial Playground represents innovation. It shows what is possible when accessibility and innovation merge. The result is a space where all children can play without limitations.
