Kelab Golf Negara Subang or Subang National Golf Club isn’t just any golf course. It boasts two 18-hole championship courses the Putra and the Kelana. These weren’t always here. This land was once a rubber plantation. Then in 1963 a momentous decision was made. A new golf course would grace Kuala Lumpur.
The brainchild of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman this club was originally called Sungei Way Golf Club. It opened in 1968. At the time the Royal Selangor Golf Club was the main club in Kuala Lumpur with 1500 members. This new club would add to the golfing scene.
The Putra course designed by Seiichi Inoue opened first. Tom Verity later made improvements. Then came the Kelana course designed by Bradford Benz and J. Michael Poellet in the mid to late 1970s. The club grew. It hosted many tournaments. By 1972 the Selangor Open was held here. Golfers agreed it was a tough but fair challenge.
In 1981 Kelab Golf Negara Subang made history. It became the only club in Malaysia with a fully automatic sprinkler system. This kept the courses pristine. It meant golfers could enjoy a consistently smooth and challenging game. The courses are a blend of tree-lined fairways and open parkland. The terrain is gently undulating perfect for a walk.
Today Kelab Golf Negara Subang is a private members club. Only members and their guests can play. But everyone can enjoy the restaurants. They offer a wide array of food from local specialties to fine dining. There is even a golfer’s terrace cafe for a quick bite.
The club is also known for its junior golf program. It aims to nurture young golfing talent. Many exciting tournaments are held annually at Kelab Golf Negara Subang. From the ABC Medal to the Senior Golfers Medal and Ladies Classic Trophy there’s always something happening. It’s also hosted prestigious events like the Heineken Golf Tournament.
