Beneath the vibrant heart of Osaka lies a serene escape. Keitaku Garden awaits to unfold its tranquil beauty before you. This is not just a garden. It is a journey into the soul of Japanese artistry and history.

Keitaku Garden once belonged to the Sumitomo family. They were wealthy merchants from Osaka’s Edo period. In 1926, the family gifted this verdant paradise along with their main residence to the city. Today, the Osaka City Museum of Art stands where their home once was, right in front of Keitaku Garden.

Imagine stepping through the garden’s entrance. The air is instantly cooler, calmer. You are enveloped by a landscape meticulously crafted by Ogawa Jihei VII, also known as Ueji. He was a master landscape architect. Ogawa Jihei also designed gardens for Kyoto’s Heian Jingu Shrine and Maruyama Park.

Keitakuen Garden is a Chisen-kaiyushiki garden. This means it is designed around a central pond. The pond invites you to stroll along its winding paths. Artificial hills rise on three sides. They create a varied and dynamic landscape.

As you wander, notice the carefully placed stepping stones and bridges. They guide you through the garden. They offer unique perspectives of the pond and its surroundings. Tea rooms and azumayas beckon you to pause and reflect.

Look closely at the pond. Colorful koi fish glide through the water. Turtles bask on the sun-kissed stones along the shore. If you are lucky, you might spot egrets or herons among the lush greenery.

The Choseian tea house stands gracefully overlooking the pond. Once a place for traditional tea ceremonies, it now serves as a pavilion. You can rest here and soak in the garden’s beauty. Refreshments are available from a vending machine nearby.

Continue your stroll along the stream. Discover hidden coves with benches nestled under the trees. Keitakuen Garden invites you to immerse yourself in nature. Embrace the Japanese practice of “forest bathing” or shinrinyoku.

Keitaku Garden boasts over two hundred plant species. Each season brings its unique colors and fragrances. Visit in autumn to witness the breathtaking display of maple trees. They explode in shades of orange, red, and yellow. In spring and summer, admire the delicate beauty of apricots, azaleas, irises, and water lilies.

Keitakuen Garden was originally named “Keizawaen”. Shunsui, the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, chose the name. He wanted to honor his ancestor. Later, upon its completion, it was renamed Keitakuen.

Take a moment to appreciate the thoughtful design and meticulous care that have shaped Keitaku Garden. It is a testament to the Sumitomo family’s legacy. It is also a celebration of Japanese landscape architecture. As you leave Keitakuen Garden, carry its tranquility with you. Let it be a reminder of the beauty and peace that can be found even in the heart of a bustling city.
