Keck Theater’s stage has seen countless stories unfold. But have you ever wondered about the stories behind the stage itself? Here at Occidental College, the Keck Theater isn’t just a venue. It’s a vibrant hub of creativity and student life. Keck Theater has witnessed history, from presidential inaugurations to student-written plays. The Los Angeles Times once described Keck Theater as a “paradoxical paragon of spacious intimacy and comfortable elegance”. This description captures the essence of this unique space. Keck Theater hosts three professionally directed productions every year. The theater also nurtures emerging talent through the New Works Festival. This festival showcases original student-written plays. It provides a platform for students to collaborate with working directors and actors. In September 2024, Keck Theater buzzed with anticipation. Students auditioned for fall plays, including “Poor Clare” and “Antigone”. One student, Athya Paramesh, was drawn to the themes of social justice in “Poor Clare”. Another student, Franklin Zhang, connected with the emotional depth of “Antigone”. Even for students without prior acting experience, Keck Theater offered an inclusive and supportive environment. Keck Theater isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of fostering young talent. It’s a place where history is made and where the future of theater takes shape.
