Military maneuvers and aerospace ambitions. That’s how Kearny Mesa’s story began. We’re standing in a community shaped by forces both large and small. Kearny Mesa takes its name from Camp Kearny. This was a bustling military base from 1917 to 1946. It later became the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The base, and subsequently the area, were named for Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny. He was a prominent figure in the Mexican-American War and a military governor of California. Interestingly, while his name was pronounced “Car-nee” during his life, locals now say “Cur-nee”.
Kearny Mesa isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a vibrant community in central San Diego. Bounded by major freeways, it’s nestled among other well-known neighborhoods like Serra Mesa and Clairemont. The area is surprisingly flat, living up to the “mesa” in its name. This flat terrain played a role in its development.
In 1937, Gibbs Airfield, now Montgomery Field, marked the start of Kearny Mesa’s urbanization. The city acquired the airfield and surrounding land in 1948. They considered it as a replacement for San Diego International Airport. However, airspace conflicts with MCAS Miramar grounded that plan. Montgomery Field remains a hub for smaller aircraft. The surplus land transformed into the industrial park we see today.
Kearny Mesa became a magnet for aerospace and electronics companies starting in 1955 with General Dynamics. This industrial boom spurred commercial development, particularly west of State Route 163. Today, Kearny Mesa boasts a blend of businesses. You’ll find everything from auto dealerships and national chains to smaller, independent enterprises. The area is also a foodie paradise, known for its diverse array of restaurants.
Within Kearny Mesa lies the Convoy District, a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of San Diego. Designated as the Convoy Pan Asian Cultural & Business Innovation District in 2020, it’s a culinary and cultural hotspot. The district offers a vibrant array of Asian cuisine, from Korean BBQ and Japanese ramen to Chinese dim sum and Vietnamese pho. The seeds of this cultural hub were sown in 1979 with the arrival of a Woo Chee Chong grocery store. It became an anchor for other Asian businesses, creating a destination for authentic food and goods.
Kearny Mesa is more than just businesses. It’s home to residential areas like Stonecrest and Kearny Lodge. It also houses important civic services. The county maintains a large complex here. Community groups like the Kearny Mesa Planning Group actively shape the area’s future. Kearny Mesa continues to evolve. With plans for increased housing and transit development, the future of this dynamic community looks as bright as the San Diego sunshine.
