Established in 1855 Kean University boasts a rich history. It began as the Newark Normal School a teacher training college. Imagine 85 students mostly women. They were primarily Newark High School alumni. The school’s focus was improving teacher skills. This was crucial for Newark’s growing schools.
Kean’s story isn’t just about educating teachers. It’s about adapting and evolving. The Civil War impacted enrollment. Fewer men attended as they joined the Union Army. Post-war the school’s diversity increased. More Catholic students enrolled reflecting Newark’s changing demographics. By 1911 children of immigrants made up over 30 percent of the student body. Kean became one of the nation’s most diverse institutions.
The university moved several times. It started at Newark High School then to the Market Street School. Finally it settled in a new building on Fourth Street and Belleville Avenue. The school’s name changed too reflecting its growth. It became New Jersey State Normal School then New Jersey State Teachers College.
A significant moment arrived in 1958. The college relocated to Union Township. This was the site of the Kean family’s Liberty Hall estate. This stunning Georgian-style mansion was originally built in 1760 by William Livingston New Jersey’s first governor. Alexander Hamilton also resided there. Liberty Hall witnessed the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Connecticut Farms.
The move to Liberty Hall marked a turning point. The college expanded its programs. It transitioned from a teacher’s college into a comprehensive university. In 1959 it became Newark State College. Then in 1973 it was renamed Kean College of New Jersey honoring the influential Kean family. Finally on September 26 1997 Kean College achieved university status. It became Kean University.
Today Kean University thrives. It’s the fourth-largest institution of higher education in New Jersey. It has five colleges and the Nathan Weiss Graduate College. Kean houses several prominent research institutions including the New Jersey Center for Science Technology and Mathematics. It even has campuses in Toms River and Wenzhou China. Kean University is a testament to its enduring legacy and commitment to education. It continues to shape lives and contribute to society.
