Standing here before the Katzenberg, do you feel the history beneath your feet? This protected landscape in Erfurt tells a silent story. It is a story of nature and time. The Katzenberg’s total area spans 10.5 hectares. It is divided into three parts. Imagine this area.

The Katzenberg marks a distinct step in the landscape. This step lies within the agricultural fields of Kerspleben and Töttleben. These areas are in the western part of Erfurt. Two of the three sections are surrounded solely by fields. The third section borders a spacious garden area. Think of the contrast between cultivated land and wilder gardens.

Geologically, the Katzenberg rests on layers of the Lower Keuper. These layers form the foundation of the landscape. The area mainly features dry grasslands that face southeast to southwest. These grasslands host various stages of ecological succession. This means plant communities change over time.

Scattered throughout are also pockets of deciduous shrubs and trees. Picture small orchards and areas of tall herbs. These plants thrive in dry, warm conditions. Distinct hedgerows run parallel to the edge of the slope. These features mark both the Kleine and Grosse Katzenberg.

In the late 1990s, a comprehensive survey of the Katzenberg’s flora and fauna took place. Researchers identified 221 plant species in the area. Notably, the area contains significant regional populations of Pontic Wormwood. Imagine the silvery foliage of Artemisia pontica. Also present are Hairy Vetchling and tall Spearwort.

Faunal surveys revealed at least seven species of mammals. Three types of reptiles and amphibians were found. Fifty-six bird species call this place home. Among them are breeding pairs of Ortolan Bunting and Whinchat. Many of the 240 beetle species are endangered in Thuringia.

These include the longhorn beetles Phytoecia pustulata and Tetrops starcki. Also endangered is the leaf beetle Longitarsus quadriguttatus. Besides beetles, 15 grasshopper species and 171 butterfly species were identified. Nineteen types of land snails inhabit the protected area. One is the Cylindrical Shell Snail.

The Katzenberg is more than just a hill. It is a habitat. It is a refuge for rare plants and animals. The area plays a role in Erfurt’s biodiversity. As you explore, remember the delicate balance of this landscape. The Katzenberg is a reminder of nature’s resilience. It is also a reminder of the importance of conservation.
