Hidden amidst the gentle slopes south of Sünderup lies Kattloch, a quiet neighborhood woven into the fabric of Flensburg’s Tarup district. Kattloch, whose name remains a mystery to this day, began its journey in the 19th century as a solitary farmhouse overlooking the Sünderupfeld. This humble dwelling stood watch over the road connecting Adelby and Tastrup. As time marched forward, Kattloch grew, adding three more houses by the dawn of the 20th century. The 1950s saw further expansion with the addition of more single-family homes. The Adelby-Tastruper Weg, the very road that Kattloch overlooked, was renamed Ringstrasse in 1975. Today, the railway underpass where Ringstrasse dips beneath the Kiel-Flensburg railway line is also known as Kattloch. Kattloch itself remains a small residential area, comprised of a handful of houses and their accompanying outbuildings. Just a stone’s throw from Kattloch is the newer settlement of Hochfeld, developed in the early 2000s. The once-empty Sünderupfeld, bordering Kattloch to the west, now bursts with the energy of youth. It serves as a designated activity area where young people up to the age of 21 can enjoy a spirited game of football. In 2013, a children’s daycare center opened near Kattloch, adding to the growing community. More recently, in 2015, Flensburg’s city council earmarked an area just west of Kattloch for development into a commercial zone, further transforming the landscape of this once-quiet corner of Flensburg.
