Hidden amidst the bustling streets and vibrant markets, the Kathu Shrine stands as a testament to Phuket’s rich history. It’s more than just a beautiful structure. It’s the heart of the local Chinese-Thai community and the birthplace of the exhilarating Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Kathu Shrine, also known as Lai Thu Tao Bo Keng or Aam Kathu, has witnessed centuries of tradition and devotion. Originally a simple structure built over 200 years ago, it has evolved, incorporating elaborate designs inspired by traditional Chinese shrines. Inside, statues of Chinese gods and wooden Buddha images watch over the faithful. A prominent statue of Guan Yin, a revered goddess, offers a sense of peace. The shrine’s principal deity, Tian Hu Nguan Soi, is the same deity honored at Jui Tui Shrine in Phuket Town, connecting Kathu Shrine to a larger network of spiritual significance. Kathu Shrine’s connection to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is deeply rooted in the island’s history. In the early 1800s, Kathu was the center of Phuket’s tin mining industry, drawing Chinese migrants who brought their culture and beliefs. The shrine became a focal point for these traditions. Legend tells of a visiting Chinese opera troupe in 1825 during an epidemic. One performer fell ill, prompting the troupe to perform rituals honoring their gods. The illness vanished, captivating locals who adopted these rituals, eventually evolving into the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The opera troupe gifted three god images to Kathu Shrine: Tian Hu Nguan Soi, Lee Lochia, and Sam-Hu-Ong-Iah. They became central figures in the festival. Later, a Kathu Shrine committee member returned from China with a sacred incense urn, now a symbol of the Nine Emperor Gods, and a book of scriptures dictating the festival’s procedures. This treasured document remains within a secret room at Kathu Shrine. Every year, usually in October, Kathu Shrine transforms during the nine-day Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Worshippers in white fill the shrine, offering incense and witnessing captivating rituals. The pole-raising ceremony marks the festival’s beginning, followed by bladed ladder climbing and fire-walking by spirit mediums. The air fills with incense and the sounds of firecrackers. Vegetarian food abounds, offered to worshippers and sold by vendors in the surrounding streets. Kathu Shrine’s legacy lives on, intertwined with the vibrant spirit of Phuket.
