The Katholisches Pfarramt Christkönig, nestled on Zabel-Krüger-Damm, isn’t imposing. Its humble exterior, a rectangular structure with unassuming windows, gives no hint of the stories it holds. This modest building began its life not as a church, but as a repurposed military barrack gifted by the French after the Second World War. Imagine the transformation, from a structure of war to a sanctuary of peace. The original small wooden barrack, perched atop a community room, was expanded to accommodate a small choir area, enveloped by a modest apartment. The church’s façade, facing the street, features a subtly recessed tower, flanked by two round windows. This tower, rising almost twice the height of the roof ridge, is crowned by a flat roof and a dark attic pierced with openings for the bell’s resonance. Step inside the Katholisches Pfarramt Christkönig, and you’ll find a simple, yet evocative space. A free-standing altar and a wooden statue of Christ occupy the choir area. Above, in the bell tower, hang two historic bronze bells. One whispers tales from the 18th century, the other echoes memories from the 17th. These bells, survivors of time, were even reunited with their original clappers in 2008 after a much-needed repair.
