The institution, entrusted to the Diocese of Osnabrück and championed by Bishop Hermann Wilhelm Berning, expanded to include an infant home in 1927. Its name, Wilhelmstift, honors the Bishop’s dedication. By 1930, rooms for expectant mothers were added, allowing births to take place within the home, expanding the Wilhelmstift’s reach. Recognizing the urgent need for specialized pediatric care in postwar Hamburg, the Wilhelmstift added 36 hospital beds in 1947, marking its official transition into a children’s hospital. Katholisches Kinderkrankenhaus Wilhelmstift faced constant growth. This led to a new building in 1956. Later, in 1982, it integrated the Kinderkrankenhaus Walddörfer, further expanding its capacity and services. The Katholisches Kinderkrankenhaus Wilhelmstift isn’t just Hamburg’s largest children’s hospital with 249 beds. It represents a continuous evolution of care and compassion. It provides cutting-edge pediatric treatment in 23 specialized departments, all under one roof. The collaborative approach ensures comprehensive care for approximately 12,000 inpatients and 50,000 outpatients annually.
