“A former church, now a place of healing.” The Katholische Schule für Pflegeberufe Essen gGmbH, housed within the walls of the former St. Peter’s Church, stands as a testament to transformation. This isn’t just a school. It’s a living, breathing piece of Essen’s history, reborn. The Katholische Schule für Pflegeberufe Essen gGmbH, or KKS, was founded in 1975. It started as a collaboration between three Essen hospitals: Elisabeth-Krankenhaus, Philippusstift, and Franziskus Krankenhaus. Their goal was simple yet profound: to create a more effective way to train nurses. Over the years, more hospitals joined. The school grew, gaining state recognition in 1990. The Katholische Schule für Pflegeberufe Essen gGmbH offers training for a variety of healthcare roles. These include registered nurses, nursing assistants, and surgical and anesthesia technical assistants. It’s also a place where experienced nurses can advance their careers. They offer further training to become practice instructors. Since early 2024, they have expanded to include adaptation courses for nurses from abroad. The school is supported by partners in healthcare and elder care from Essen and neighboring cities. Practical training takes place within these partners’ facilities. The church of St. Peter, deconsecrated due to restructuring within the Essen diocese, found new life in 2007. The KKS purchased the building for 53,000 euros. They invested a significant 2.8 million euros to transform the space. By April 2008, the Katholische Schule für Pflegeberufe Essen gGmbH had a new home. This move united all parts of the school under one roof. Previously, different departments were spread across Essen, including locations in Kupferdreh and Bedingrade. The official inauguration took place on May 15, 2008. It was a momentous occasion, graced by the presence of Ruhr Bishop Felix Genn and Mayor Annette Jäger. The Katholische Schule für Pflegeberufe Essen gGmbH represents more than just education. It embodies a community’s commitment to care and a unique blend of history and healing. From sacred space to a hub of modern healthcare training, this former church continues to serve the people of Essen. It stands as a powerful reminder that even in transitions, purpose can be found and new life can blossom.
