This magnificent cathedral wasn’t built overnight. Its origins trace back to the Konradin church around 1130. Construction continued around 1200 in the Romanesque style. Parts of this earlier church remain today like the basements of the side towers.
The iconic west tower and the striking nave followed from 1230 to 1330. Built in the French Gothic style these elements are central to the Minster’s identity. Completion however was delayed. A chancel redesign started in 1354. An inscription on the north portal still marks this event. The Minster was finally completed in 1510.

Explore its interior you’ll find 91 uniquely designed figures. A few were destroyed during World War II but replaced with copies. These figures serve not only as decoration but also as rain drains.
Climbing the west tower however requires stamina. There is no elevator. 333 steps lead to a breathtaking panoramic view of Freiburg. The Minster’s 750-year-old Angelus bell fills the air with its flawless sound. It is one of the oldest in Germany.
The Freiburg Minster’s dedication to Mary Mother of God is significant. It reflects the Catholic faith’s devotion to her. Maria is the patroness of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. She holds a special place of honor here.
Remarkably the Freiburg Minster survived World War II largely unscathed. Despite the intense bombing raids it suffered only minor roof damage and the loss of some decorative figures. This was truly fortunate. Almost every building nearby was reduced to rubble.
