Ever wondered how a student organization could exist in two cities at once? Here at Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße 17 in Greifswald, we find the Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Alemannia zu Greifswald und Münster. It is no ordinary student group. This unique organization thrives in both Greifswald and Münster.

Founded in Greifswald on November 29, 1891, the KDStV Alemannia zu Greifswald und Münster has a rich history. It became a member of the Cartellverband der katholischen deutschen Studentenverbindungen in the same year. The KDStV Alemannia experienced a period of forced inactivity during the National Socialist era. Yet, its spirit was rekindled in Münster in July 1947, initially under the name “Waterkant”. The original name was readopted in 1949.

Interestingly, students in Greifswald, unaware of the Münster chapter, independently revived the Alemannia tradition in 1983. This happened within the Katholische Studentengemeinde. In the summer semester of 1990, the two groups united. They formed one organization with active chapters in both Greifswald and Münster.

The Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Alemannia zu Greifswald und Münster stands out. It is a single entity operating in two cities. Each city has its own active student body, house, and semester program. But both share a common alumni association. They consider themselves one brotherhood. This unusual arrangement has been accepted by the Cartellverband. The KDStV Alemannia is one of the few German-speaking organizations existing in two locations simultaneously.

The Alemannia’s colors are Schwarz Gold Grün. Its motto is “In tempestate securitas” meaning “In storm, safety”. Members commit to the principles of religion, science, friendship, and love for the fatherland. The coat of arms embodies these values. The cross symbolizes religion. The torch represents science. The rose signifies friendship. The griffin embodies love for the fatherland.

The house of the Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Alemannia zu Greifswald und Münster in Greifswald was renovated in 1994/95. It was rebuilt in the summer semester 2003, leaving only the outer walls standing. Today, it offers modern amenities. These include DSL, Premiere, a garden, a billiard table, and social spaces. These spaces include a Kneipsaal, a bar, and a salon.

Several notable individuals have been members of the KDStV Alemannia. They include politicians, bishops, professors, and judges. Their affiliations span various fields and reflect the diverse membership of the organization. The Katholische Deutsche Studentenverbindung Alemannia zu Greifswald und Münster is more than just a student group.
