Fifty years ago the Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule opened its doors. It wasn’t just any school. The Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule housed two schools under one roof. A regular German-speaking school served the neighborhood. A bilingual German-Polish school attracted students from all over Berlin.

The Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule is named after Katharina Heinroth. She was the first female director of Berlin Zoo after World War II. The building itself is special. Built between 1905 and 1907 it blends early modern architecture with elements of late Gothic and Renaissance styles. It’s a beautiful building. It even has two entrances. One on Münsterische Straße. The other on the corner of Westfälische Straße and Eisenzahnstraße. The Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule is more than bricks and mortar.

It’s a place where children from twenty different nations learn together. They represent the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of Berlin. This wasn’t always the case. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, two separate schools merged to form the Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule. This merger brought together students and teachers from different backgrounds. They created a dynamic learning environment. The Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule is a place of diversity. It’s a place of inclusion.

Beyond the classrooms the school has a strong sense of community. There’s a parents association that plays a vital role. Many extracurricular activities are available. The school is even part of the national “Schools without Racism – Schools with Courage” network. It’s a testament to the school’s commitment to anti-discrimination and inclusivity. The school also participates in international exchange programs such as the Erasmus+ project “European Games”.

The Katharina-Heinroth-Grundschule is an important part of the Berlin community. It’s a place where children learn grow and thrive. It’s a place that embraces diversity celebrates community and promotes values of equality and respect. It’s much more than just a school. It’s a vital part of Berlin’s history and future. It’s a testament to the power of education and the importance of inclusivity. It’s a school to be proud of. A school to admire. A school that makes Berlin better. And that’s a story worth remembering.
