Picture the Kasteel Van Ossel. Its imposing silhouette stands before you. This isn’t just any castle. It’s a storybook setting steeped in history.

Kasteel Van Ossel also known as Hof ter Logien has a rich past. It began as a simple farmhouse. In 1705 Josse-Hubert van de Vyvere bought it. He transformed the farmhouse into a grand country estate. He added a gatehouse and a dovecote. He also created a 170-meter-long avenue leading to the church.

Van de Vyvere’s vision was impressive. He created beautiful gardens north of the castle. He didn’t just add structures. He shaped the landscape itself. The avenue a symbol of connection still stands today a testament to his ambition.

The estate changed hands. Willem van Haren acquired it in 1764. Sadly he committed suicide in 1768. The reasons behind his despair remain lost to time. But the castle stands as a silent witness to his tragedy.

The 19th century brought further changes. Victor Anne modernized the interior. He commissioned Joseph Schadde a renowned architect. Schadde designed a stunning neoclassical coach house and stables. He also oversaw the creation of a new fruit and vegetable garden. The garden flourished. It boasted a remarkable array of fruit varieties.

The gardens expanded. They reached 14 hectares by 1880. Famous landscape architect Edouard Keilig contributed to the design. Around 1892 the gardens acquired their current layout. This serene landscape is the result of careful planning and a passion for beauty. A quiet place away from the city’s hustle.

The Kasteel Van Ossel isn’t just stone and mortar. It is a living chronicle of families dreams and tragedies. A tapestry woven with ambition loss and remarkable horticultural achievements. A place that whispers tales of the past. A reminder that even the most beautiful gardens can hide stories of sorrow. Take a moment to reflect on the layers of history visible here. Imagine the people who walked these grounds. Their lives are woven into the very fabric of this magnificent Kasteel Van Ossel.
