Kasteel Groot-Bijgaarden is located a mere 7 kilometers from Brussels. It stands as a testament to Belgium’s rich historical heritage. The Pelgrims de Bigard family currently owns the castle.
Imagine this: a wide moat surrounds the castle. Its still waters reflect the proud, leafy canopy of centuries-old beech trees. A five-arched bridge guarded by two heraldic figures from the 17th century spans the moat. This bridge leads to a drawbridge. It grants access to the fortified entrance. The entrance’s central section dates back to the 15th century.
The castle itself dates to the 17th century. It is a large structure built in a beautiful, pure Flemish Renaissance style. Notice the long main building constructed of pink bricks. White sandstone window sills accentuate the facade. They contrast beautifully with the dark blue slate roof. The left wing features a distinctive pear-shaped tower spire. The chapel adjoins the right wing. Remarkably, it has remained unchanged for three centuries.
The imposing 30-meter-high castle tower stands to the left of the fortified gate. This donjon dates back to 1347. It has four stories. Its walls are two meters thick. From the fourth floor’s platform protected by a crenelated wall, you can enjoy a stunning view. It stretches up to 30 kilometers across the estate and the Flemish countryside.
In 1486, Willem Estor acquired the castle and the Bijgaarden estate. Ferdinand van Booischot bought the castle in 1634. Over fifteen years, he transformed it into its current appearance. He also had the chapel built.
Raymond Pelgrims de Bigard saved the greatly dilapidated castle from ruin. He began a thirty-year renovation in 1902. His descendants continue his work.
The 14-hectare park next to the castle was designed by landscape architect Louis Fuchs in the early 20th century. Every spring, the park opens for an international flower exhibition. Tulips take center stage.
