The Astrakiano gorge, also known as the gorge of Karteros, is part of a larger geological complex. It includes the gorges Kounavon-Astrakon-Karteros. This complex is approximately 21500 km long.

The geological formation lies east of Heraklion. It runs through the Municipalities of N Kazantzaki, Episkopi, and Nea Alikarnassos. It forms part of the Yuhtas Ecological Park. The park spans 4000 acres. It includes Mount Yuhtas and three gorges. These are Knossano, Kounaviano, and Astrakiano or Karteros Gorge. It is the largest in length.

The area is part of the Natura 2000 network. The gorges connect with settlements along their routes. There are five main entrances. One is from Karteros. Another is from Aitania. There is one from Ag Paraskies, one from Lower Astrakos and one in the Plain of Peza. Each entrance has an information booth.

The gorges hold historical and cultural value. Ancient Eltina, the Minoan settlement of Myrtia, and the Minoan cemetery of Astrakon are located here. The gorges combine preservation with promotion. The Astrakian gorge or Karteros Gorge is one of the largest in the area. Its total route length is about 12.5 km. The starting point is after the settlement of Kato Astrakon. The Karteros river flows in its riverbed along the route. The gorge ends in Mesa Karteros. This area is characterized by extraordinary beauty. It has leisure infrastructure. There is also a car park. It is recommended to leave the car there. We can continue on foot to Karteros beach. The whole route lasts about 3.5 hours. It is considered an easy route.

Basic infrastructure projects ensure safe visits. These include a forest tourism path. Bridges have been installed. Wooden railings and signage guide visitors. Before the war, there were 10 watermills in the gorge. Locals fished for eels and crabs.
