Is it true that sand can sing? Here on Karon Beach, it does. The fine white sand squeaks beneath your feet as you walk. Karon Beach, the second largest tourist beach in Phuket, stretches for 3 kilometers along the west coast, south of Patong and north of Kata. It’s a vibrant hub, but unlike the bustling Patong, Karon offers a quieter escape, perfect for families and couples. Notice how most hotels are set back from the shoreline, across a relatively quiet road. This leaves the entire beach open to the public, as all beaches are in Thailand. While large resorts line the road opposite the beach, the long, broad expanse of sand itself remains blissfully undeveloped. The unique squeaking sand is a hallmark of Karon. This phenomenon comes from the high quartz content of the sand. As the grains rub together, they create a distinctive sound. At the southern end of Karon Beach, a beautiful coral reef stretches towards Kata and Bu Island, offering excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. Remember to check local conditions before venturing out, as currents can be strong at certain times of the year. Back on shore, a wide pedestrian and bicycle path runs the length of the beach, perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. Most restaurants, bars, and tour companies cluster at the north-central end, near the traffic circle, or towards the south end on Bangla Rd. This Bangla Rd is a much more laid-back version of its namesake in Patong, offering a calmer nightlife experience centered around dining and relaxed beer bars. For a truly tranquil experience, head to the northern third of Karon Beach. This area remains largely undeveloped and is bordered by Nong Harn Lake. This is the largest beachside park in Phuket and offers a scenic path for jogging, cycling, or a peaceful walk amidst lush greenery. You can also choose a motorbike to discover the island.
