Did you know the Karmeliterkloster in Frankfurt once housed one of Northern Europe’s largest fresco cycles? This stunning monastery complex stands before you a testament to centuries of history. Founded around 1246 the Karmeliterkloster wasn’t always the Institute for Municipal History and Archaeological Museum you see today. It began humbly. It grew into a vast complex with a church. It also had functional buildings and its own graveyard.

The monastery’s current form dates mostly from the 15th century. This was a time of significant expansion. The church was enlarged. Cloisters and a substantial north wing were added. This wing included a refectory and dormitory. Imagine the bustling life within these walls.

The Karmeliterkloster’s artistic legacy is equally remarkable. Thanks to generous patrons including members of the Frankfurt patriciate the Swabian artist Jorg Ratgeb was commissioned to adorn the cloisters and refectory with frescoes between 1514 and 1521. Ratgeb’s work depicting the Passion and salvation in the cloister is breathtaking. His depictions of the Carmelite order’s history in the refectory are equally significant. These murals are some of the most extensive and important north of the Alps. Sadly Ratgeb was later executed for his participation in the German Peasant’s War of 1525.

After secularization in 1803 the city took over the Karmeliterkloster. The building served multiple purposes. It was a warehouse a garrison a fire station even a theatre at various points in its long history. World War II almost destroyed it damaging the priceless frescoes. Extensive restoration took place from 1955 to 1957 and then again from 1987 to 1989.

Today the Karmeliterkloster continues to thrive. The Institute for the History of Frankfurt resides here. The Archaeological Museum is also housed in the former church. And in the cellar you’ll find Die Schmiere a satirical cabaret theatre. This building is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living chronicle of Frankfurt’s rich and vibrant past. It’s a testament to resilience creativity and the enduring spirit of a city that embraces its history. The Karmeliterkloster is a true treasure of Frankfurt and a fascinating place to explore.
