Legend says a lot about the Karlsteine. These stones whisper tales of Charlemagne’s divine power. He supposedly split a massive capstone with his whip. This act was to prove a point to the Saxon duke Widukind. Widukind wanted a divine sign.

The Karlsteine near Osnabrück are among Lower Saxony’s famous megalithic graves. They are also called Schluppstein. These stones are a significant part of our region’s history. The Karlsteine’s name connects to the legend of Charlemagne. It tells a story of faith and power.

These megalithic graves date back to 3500 to 2800 BC. This makes them a part of the Funnelbeaker culture. The Karlsteine consist of the Großen Karlsteine and the Kleinen Karlsteine.

Unlike other megalithic sites, the Karlsteine aren’t made of Ice Age boulders. Instead, builders used sandstone from Piesberg quarry. This local sandstone gives the Karlsteine a unique character.

The main chamber measures 8.5 by 3 meters. While not huge, the stones are impressive. The largest capstone is 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.8 meters. Most of the orthostats and capstones still stand.

The excellent preservation enhances the Karlsteine’s reputation. Its location on a steep slope in a deciduous forest adds to its monumental impact. Since the 17th century, artists and writers have loved the Karlsteine. They became a popular subject in art and literature.

Just southeast of the Großen Karlsteine lies the Kleinen Karlsteine. This smaller grave is much more damaged. It also used Piesberg sandstone. The grave chamber originally had four bays.

These stones tell stories of ancient beliefs. They also speak of the landscape. Nearby lies the “Kreuz im Hone”. It commemorates the first mass in this area. The cross is also called “Teggenbökenkreuz”. It’s surrounded by ten beech trees. Legend says seven brothers serving the emperor inspired seven original trees. Today, only three remain.

Visiting the Karlsteine offers a journey through time. You can explore Neolithic construction. Also you can reflect on legends of faith and power. As you stand here consider the stories held within these stones. They link us to the distant past. The Karlsteine stand as silent witnesses. They connect us to history.
