“Willi” they call it. That’s the nickname for Karlsberg. A casual name for a hill steeped in history. Right here in front of us stands Karlsberg the second highest peak in Berlin’s Grunewald forest.

Karlsberg isn’t just any hill. It’s an end moraine. A relic of the last ice age. Its very existence speaks of powerful glaciers. Glaciers that shaped this landscape millennia ago. Its height 78.5 meters above sea level offers stunning views. The views overlook the Havel River a beautiful Berlin waterway.

Named after Prince Carl the third son of King Frederick William III and Queen Louise. Karlsberg reflects a royal connection. The name links it to Prussian history. A significant part of Berlin’s past.

But Karlsberg offers more than just history. It’s a popular spot for Berliners. Cyclists and joggers frequent its paths. The trails wind through a dense forest. The trees create a calming atmosphere. The forest provides shade on hot days.

At the summit stands the Grunewaldturm. This tower was built to commemorate the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I. The tower isn’t just a viewing point. It also houses a restaurant. A place to enjoy the panoramic vista.

Gone is the old miniature golf course. In its place sits a beer garden. The beer garden offers refreshments. The refreshing drinks add to the relaxation. Nearby is the Waldhaus another restaurant popular with visitors. The Waldhaus sits about 100 meters from the foot of the Grunewaldturm. The miniature golf course relocated here after being removed from behind the Waldhaus.

The Havelchaussee runs right across Karlsberg. This makes the Grunewaldturm easily accessible. You can get there by car or public transport. This convenient access adds to the popularity of Karlsberg. The hill seamlessly blends nature with recreation. The historical significance adds depth.

Karlsberg isn’t just a hill. It’s a microcosm of Berlin. It is a testament to history nature and recreation. Soak in the views. Enjoy the atmosphere. Remember Karlsberg “Willi” a small hill with a big story.
