Deep in the heart of Athens, nestled on the slopes of the Acropolis, lies the workshop of George Karellas, a master craftsman of traditional Greek instruments. Karellas’s story begins not amidst the bustling city, but in a small village, where as a young boy he apprenticed in his grandfather’s workshop. He learned the language of wood, crafting everything from wine barrels to pack saddles. His innate curiosity led him to explore the world of sound. He carved his first “tsafari,” a flute from reed leftovers, a testament to his burgeoning passion. Karellas’s fascination with sound deepened at a nearby monastery. He observed the monks calling for mass by striking a specially carved piece of wood, a daily ritual that resonated within him. Eventually, life led him to Athens, to the workshop of his uncle, a hub of professional instrument craftsmanship. Fifteen years of relentless work honed his skills, allowing him to master a wide range of instrument making. With newfound confidence, Karellas established his own workshop. Here, he pours his passion into the creation of bouzoukis, lutes, tzouras, mandolins, tambouras, and guitars. Each instrument bears his unique artistic signature, a blend of traditional techniques and innovative approaches. Karellas’s instruments are renowned for their sound quality, durability, and aesthetic beauty. They are a testament to his deep understanding of wood and acoustics. His workshop, a haven of traditional craftsmanship, stands as a vibrant tribute to the rich musical heritage of Greece.
