“A Venetian design in the heart of Ottoman Chalkis” whispers the wind. Before you stands Karababa Castle a formidable fortress perched on Fourka hill. It’s not just stones and mortar though. It’s a living testament to a turbulent past a blend of cultures and a strategic position overlooking the Euripos Strait.

Karababa Castle wasn’t always a Turkish stronghold. Some believe its site was once the ancient city of Kanethos. Scanty remains support this theory. The hill was fortified during Roman times. But the Karababa we see today is largely a product of the 17th century.

Built in 1684 its purpose was clear to protect Chalkis from the Venetians. Ironically it was designed by a Venetian Gerolimo Galopo. This explains its distinctly European architectural style. The Turks held Karababa until the Greek liberation in 1833. They then handed it over to the newly independent Greek state.

Imagine the siege of 1688. Morozini’s Venetian forces attacked. The defenders of Karababa held firm. The castle’s strategic location and strong design proved too much for the Venetians. They retreated leaving Karababa in Ottoman hands.

Explore the castle. Notice its oblong shape. The northern wall is reinforced with a rampart three bastions and a large tower. The south wall is less well preserved. The eastern wall is particularly impressive. You’ll find the most complex hexagonal bastion there. Look closely. Two 19th-century Russian cannons stand on the battlements silent witnesses to history.

The castle’s gate lies on the southeast side. Military buildings surrounded it. Pass through and find the bell tower. It stands where the fortress alarm bell once sounded. The only building left intact is a church dedicated to Prophet Elias. It was built in 1895 a much later addition. The western end is dominated by a seven-sided tower a testament to the fortress’s defensive capabilities. Enter the tower through a narrow vaulted corridor a sort of labyrinthine passage.

Karababa Castle isn’t just a ruin. It is a place where history unfolds before your eyes. It tells a story of conflict resilience and cultural exchange. It’s a story that echoes across centuries a story only Karababa can tell.
