The Gamma Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order, established on January 1, 1950, has been a fixture at San Diego State University. This fraternity is more than just a social club. It is an organization with deep roots and a commitment to brotherhood.
Kappa Alpha Order, was founded nationally on December 21, 1865. Three friends at Washington College, now Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, decided to create a bond of friendship and loyalty. James Ward Wood proposed a toast to the “two Williams”. From this, the idea for Kappa Alpha Order was born.
The founders wanted to build an organization focused on fellowship. They wanted to create an environment where Kappa Alphas could grow and succeed after school. Kappa Alpha Order chose Robert E. Lee as their “spiritual founder”. They were inspired by his chivalry and gentlemanly brotherhood. Lee was president of Washington College. He helped KA expand across the nation.
Kappa Alpha Order has a set of values to help guide members. These values provide a moral compass. They help members not only during college, but throughout life. The most recognizable symbol is the KA crest. It features crimson red and old gold. The flowers, crimson rose and magnolia blossom, surround the coat of arms. The crest features lions and a Knight Commander.
The Kappa Alpha flag also highlights the KA colors. It displays crimson red and old gold. A Greek cross sits in the center. These colors remind all members of what Kappa Alpha stands for. Each chapter proudly flies the flag. It shows everyone at the college their excellence. The motto “Dieu et les Dames” translates to “God and the Ladies.”
Kappa Alpha Order is known for leadership, service, scholarship, and excellence. Many famous people were members. Zac Brown, the lead singer of the Zac Brown Band, was a KA. He was a member of the Zeta Kappa chapter at the University of West Georgia. Jerry Richardson, founder of the Carolina Panthers, was also a KA. He was in the Delta chapter at Wofford College. Actor Rob Huebel, known for “The Office”, was a member too. He belonged to the Delta Omicron chapter at Clemson University. Even Joe Kennedy III, a politician, was a KA. He was a member of the Alpha Pi chapter at Stanford University.
The Kappa Alpha Order continues to thrive at San Diego State University. It provides a space for brotherhood, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence. The Gamma Iota Chapter embodies the values and traditions of KA. It contributes to the vibrant campus community in San Diego.
