Isn’t it remarkable how such a modest building like Kapelle Höver can hold so much history? The Kapelle Höver stands before us. It is a testament to faith and resilience in the village of Höver. This chapel isn’t just a place of worship. It is a landmark that has witnessed centuries of change.

Kapelle Höver dates back to 1394. You can see the year inscribed above the pointed archway. It was originally built as a fortified church using fieldstones. These thick walls and small arrow slits once offered protection to villagers during turbulent times.

Look at the east end of the church. Notice the three-sided choir. The pointed arch windows trimmed with brick add a touch of elegance. Above, a small bell tower rises from the gable roof. It houses a bronze church bell.

Inside Kapelle Höver, a flat ceiling covers the nave. The interior has seen many changes over the years. Originally, the altar stood separately. But in the early 19th century, a pulpit was added creating an altar-pulpit wall. This design was removed during a renovation.

Two paintings inside Kapelle Höver are works of Heinrich Plühr. He was a local artist who lived from 1859 to 1953. His art adds a personal touch to this sacred space.

In 1869, a clock tower was installed. Its striking bell was placed outside the tower under a weather guard. This ensured everyone in Höver knew the time.

Kapelle Höver once had a harmonium in 1858. This was replaced by a small electronic organ in 1972. The church continues to adapt to the needs of its congregation.

Historically, Höver has strong ties to the church in Ilten. In 1534, the Lünenburg register listed Kapelle Höver as part of Ilten. Even today, Kapelle Höver belongs to the Ilten parish.

Between 1830 and 1972, Kapelle Höver featured a wooden altar wall with a pulpit. Before that, a medieval brick altar with a sandstone slab stood. In 1972 and 1973, a renovation removed the altar and wall to create more space. The parish sold the pulpit altar to Meyenburg. Kapelle Höver received a simple altar table, a modern crucifix, and colorful stained-glass windows.

Kapelle Höver also has a community center built largely by volunteers in 1983. The Kinderinsel e. V. association also uses this building.

The bell tower has been updated over the centuries. Copper roofing was first recorded in 1657. There were renovations in 1744. The tower was rebuilt in 1810 with stone and slate. In 1933, it was renovated again with slate and copper.

Kapelle Höver’s history is rich. It has evolved from a defensive structure to a welcoming place of worship. It stands as a reminder of Höver’s past and a beacon of hope for its future.
