Beneath this unassuming exterior lies a story etched in stone and faith, the story of Kapelle Bilm. This chapel isn’t just a building. It is a testament to centuries of history. It stands as a landmark in the village of Bilm.

Kapelle Bilm dates back to the 14th century. Back then it was likely a Gothic chapel. After the Thirty Years’ War, it was repaired in 1681. You can see this date on the weathercock. The chapel underwent renovations in 1964 and 1965, after falling into disrepair.

Look closely at the structure. Kapelle Bilm is a rectangular, Gothic hall made of fieldstones. Its steep gable roof protects the interior. A simple wooden beam ceiling sits above your heads. An organ loft is to the west. Sunlight streams through the stained-glass windows installed in 1965. These were designed by Sigrid Kopfermann from Düsseldorf.

Notice the small, square roof turret. It rises from the western gable. It is topped with a pyramid-shaped roof. This feature adds to the chapel’s unique charm.

Inside Kapelle Bilm, you’ll find a small harmonium. It sits on the western gallery. It was donated from the USA around 1900. The chapel’s bell dates back even further. Christopher Hortenbach cast it in 1578. The bell is still rung today. It connects current visitors with the past.

Consider the walls around you. They tell stories of faith. They whisper of community. The chapel belonged to the parish of Ilten. In 2012, Kapelle Bilm was dissolved as an independent parish. Now it is part of the Ilten parish. However, weddings still take place here.

Imagine the sounds of celebration within these walls. Picture couples exchanging vows. Envision families gathering for baptisms. Kapelle Bilm remains a place of worship and community.

Take a moment to appreciate the Kapelle Bilm. Its humble exterior hides a rich history. The Kapelle Bilm is a symbol of faith, resilience, and community.
