“Old Chapel?” The name might sound modest, but step closer to the Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady. Locals also call it Alten Kapelle. This basilica holds a history far grander than its simple moniker suggests.

The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady is Bavaria’s oldest Catholic church. It stands proudly as one of Regensburg’s most significant religious sites. Its origins trace back to the 9th century.

Emperor Henry II founded a collegiate church here in 1002. He dedicated it to the Virgin Mary. But the story goes back even further.

Tradition says that Charlemagne ordered a chapel to be built on this very spot. This was where a Roman temple dedicated to Juno once stood. This early chapel was the oldest in Bavaria. It earned the name “Alte Kappelle” or “Old Chapel.”

The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady that you see today largely reflects 18th-century baroque style. This transformation made it a stunning example of rococo art. The renovation was influenced by the Wessobrunn School.

In 1964, the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Old Chapel received a special honor. Pope Paul VI elevated it to a minor basilica. This recognition acknowledged its historical and religious importance.

But there is more. The building where the church stands was built in the 11th century.

The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady boasts another point of interest. Pope Benedict XVI dedicated a new organ here in 2006. This happened during his visit to Regensburg.

So, while it’s called the Alten Kapelle, remember its full name. The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady. It’s a place where ancient history meets artistic grandeur. It is the oldest Catholic church in Bavaria. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of time within these walls. They whisper tales of emperors, artists, and faith.
