Originally built in the early 14th century, the Kapelle was part of the Commandery of the Knights Hospitaller in Münster. Imagine these brave knights, sworn to protect pilgrims and the sick, finding solace and faith within these very walls. The Kapelle’s architecture reflects its long history. While the core structure dates back to the Gothic period, you’ll notice Renaissance elements in the western portal, hinting at later renovations. The chapel’s life hasn’t always been peaceful. Secularized in the 19th century, it was relegated to a simple storage space. Even World War II left its mark, damaging the surrounding buildings but sparing the Kapelle. But the story doesn’t end there. In a testament to its enduring spirit, young members of the YMCA, seeing potential amidst the ruins, took on the task of restoring the chapel. Their hard work paid off, and in 1948, the Kapelle held its first service after the war. Today, the Kapelle is more than just a historical relic. It serves the Evangelical parish and stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal, a beacon of faith that has weathered the storms of time.
